Section V Football Opening Weekend
The start of the 2010 football season on Friday brought together two of the better teams in the last few years. Both teams lost a substantial amount of offense from the previous year. Hilton lost two huge impact players with the graduation of Duell Smith and Adam Gruschow. Gates-Chili lost two giants in the running game with Levester Tucker and Elijah Thomas moving on. I wasn't sure what I would see on the field Friday night.
It rained for the first half and Gates took advantage as Nick Kaminski scored two rushing td's to make it 14-0. The Spartans tacked on another score with a pass from Malcolm Frazier to Steve Tucciarello. Gates led 21-0 at halftime. Hilton bounced back with two rushing td's of their own by Mike Ingoglia in the second half and made what looked to be a blowout back into a close game. Gates offense was able to run out the remaining three minutes and hold on to the lead for a 21-14 victory. Click here for the rest of the pics...

I had a busy day Saturday but still made room to fit in 3 quarters of the RH v. Schroeder football game. It seems that both teams played this game a bit rusty making some mistakes on both sides of the ball. RH has been picked by many to be the top team in the county and they have a ton of weapons. Everyone knows about Broyld at QB but they have two great backs in (Christian) Harris and Barley. Wide receivers/DB's; Maio and Scissum are quick and play great on the defensive side in the secondary.
As for Schroeder, two players really stand out. McKnight is one of the top QB's in the league and is a dual threat. Guarino-Hyde is a returning AGR player on the line playing both ways.
The game was somewhat even for the first quarter and slowly RH picked up steam throught the next two. I left at the end of the third quarter with RH up 25-10 and was thinking the game was in hand. I found out later that Schroeder had a couple quick scores including a field goal to go up 26-25 with just over 30 seconds left. RH had a great kick return and a quick pass to Harris and turned the game back in RH's favor as they won 32-26. Click here for the rest of the pics...

Section 6 v. Section 5 Football
After the section 5 championships the previous weekend comes the western regionals where sections 5 and 6 battle to move on. This year like last was not a good one for section 5 as the Buffalo area teams dominated those from the Rochester area. The only section 5 team to move on was Hornell. Good luck to them as they continue on, hopefully they will bring states home. I was able to shoot four games that weekend. Check out the galleries by clicking here.
Sweet Home Panthers 30, Aquinas Lil' Irish 7

Randolph Cardinals 14, Dundee Scotsmen 6
Hornell Red Raiders 48, Cheektowaga Warriors 12
North Tonawanda Lumberjacks 26, Webster Schroeder Warriors 24

Looking for a Goal
First game for the Field Hockey team of Gates-Chili felt a little like last year. The Spartans faced off against the Webster Schroeder Warriors at Gates-Chili's stadium. I was hopeing to see some real improvement from last years team but it seems there is still some work to do. Many lady Spartans return to the varsity team but the competition is still a little too strong for Gates to score. A win may be too much to ask for this year but hopefully a few goals are in the works. Good luck Spartans and I hope to be there for that victory.
Schroeder kept the ball on the Spartans side of the field for most of the game. Here a Gates player blocks the pass of a Warrior attacker.

Jasjeet Dhaliwal (9) hits a rocket away from GC's goal after a whistle.

Claire Barnwell (4) seemed to be on the field the whole game working hard to keep the Warriors from scoring.

The Spartans goalkeeper Jasleen Dhaliwal (51) had a difficult time with the constant flurry of shots from the Schroeder attackers.

Webster defeated Gates 7-0.

27th Eddie Meath All-Star Game
East battled West in Section V's Eddie Meath All-Star. The game was not a great game as East beat the Westside 27-0. It was good to see a few seniors that I did not see play this year. I was impressed with East's running back Anthony Short, wide receiver Jasper Collins, and defensive lineman Mike Raplee. On the westside I was very impressed with Brett Harrington and Devin Washington's defense. On a sour note there was a fight towards the end of the game that included alot of trash talking and way too many penalties called for a all-star game. I took alot of photos so check out the gallery...here are a few.

Track and Baseball
Took a ton of pictures running around the track at Gates Chili as they took on Webster Schroeder. Alot of events take place at the same time so it is very confusing. I did my best running around for a few hours. I then finished the night with a few innings of varsity baseball. the baseball team was playing Spencerport.

Super Sectional Weekend
Last weekend was wrestling sectionals at Fairport High School for Division 1 Class AA. This weekend was Super Sectionals, where Section V's best from Division 1 and 2 showcase their talent to qualify for states. Some very impressive wrestlers from Section V. The unfortunate part was not being able to shoot the finals due to hockey sectionals taking place at the same time. I used the same remote method as last weekend and got a few decent photos.

2009 Class AA Wrestling Sectionals
Gates Chili had a few wrestlers who were involved with this two day event. I received permission to shoot and got to Fairport's gym early to set up. I was split on whether to use flash or not. I decided flash in this dimly lit gym would work best. I wanted to bounce the flash but really it was impossible with four mats going at once and not sure where I was gonna be. I used pocket wizards to keep the flash off camera and kept the flash low and on the small stand that comes with the flash. This made it very easy to move as I moved from mat to mat.
Hopefully, I will be able to shoot super sectionals also since GC has two wrestlers continuing on. I took alot of photos of many different kids in the two days of wrestling. Here are some of the shots...

Super Saturday Part 1
Had a very long day of photography Saturday. I started at 9:00 am at RIT's Gordon Field House for the high school track and field event. The RIT Invitational contained many teams in and outside of Monroe County. I have never shot inside the field house so I just tryed to keep all the distractions out and shoot one thing at a time. Anyone who has been to one of these meets knows the commotion of all the different events going on at once.
I found myself trying to shoot as many Gates Chili participants as possible. This meant shooting the pole vault and then a 3200 meter runner as they passed me where I stand. It did get very crazy trying to get all the GC athletes, but I did my best. I also tryed to shoot some of the better athletes as they participated because you could possibly see these kids in an olympic setting sometime in the future. You never know.
Anyways it was very difficult because of the dim lighting, but a few photos came out relatively well with some noise ninja applied. I had to leave early (2 pm) because I had to be at the Chocolate Ball at 4:30 pm and still needed to charge the batteries and get dressed up. You can read about the ball in Super Saturday Part 2....
