Boys Lax Continued...

Here are some more boys lacrosse regular season games from Section V.

I think on this day April 8th, I wanted to photograph a baseball game but the weather was not cooperating like the previous two days. I decided to make sure to get a game in by shooting a lacrosse game because they usually don't get rained out. I decided on the Saints and Warriors who played at Churchville-Chili's stadium. While the weather stayed decent I was able to catch a great game between the two teams. Schroeder pulled out a victory 8-6. Click here for the rest of the pics...

On April 13th, I was able to shoot the first half of Brockport at Gates-Chili as the sun was setting. Some really nice color in a bunch of the shots but had to work with some odd shadows too. Gates took control early and won by the score of 16-4. Click here for the rest of the pics...

I was in Hawaii for a week and I came back to a great game between Aquinas and Penn Yan on April 29th. Penn Yan started off quick and it looked like they might runaway with this one. Aquinas came back with a streak of goals in the second quarter to close the gap. Penn Yan played an outstanding second half to stay ahead and finish off the Irish. The Spartans played Brighton on May 1st and played great and actually tied the Barons late in the game at 10 a piece. I was very impressed with the comeback as I have seen both teams play this year and thought GC would not be able to keep it close. The Barons scored 2 late goals in the 4th quarter to retake the lead and get the win. Final score; Brighton 12, Gates-Chili 10. Early Spring Lacrosse

Spring season started with a string of boys lacrosse games. Here is a few to get my blog going again. The first game of the year was between the Bath Haverling Rams and the Mynderse Academy Blue Devils played at the Aquinas Institute on March 27th. Bath took control right away and was up big before giving up some late goals. I was excited to get back outside to shoot even if it was cold early. It did warm up by the start of the second game. The second game on Saturday put St. Francis from section 6 up against the home team Aquinas L'il Irish. St. Francis beat Bishop Kearney the day before 14-3, but section 5 had it's revenge through the Irish. I was only able to shoot the first half and Aquinas was pouring on the offense and up 8-0 when I left. The game ended with Aquinas winning 14-2. Click here for the rest of the pics...

On Monday, March 29th, the Honeoye Falls-Lima Cougars took on the Fairport Red Raiders at Fairport. The game started with a somewhat cloudy day and was overcast. Fairport scored early and often and led 13-1 at halftime. Fairport switched goalies at half and the scoring continued into the third. I left for the Canandaigua/Pittsford game after three quarters because Fairport was ahead 15-2. The game ended 16-4. Click here for the rest of the pics...

After the Fairport-HFL game, I drove over to Nazareth college for the Canandaigua-Pittsford game. I stayed 3 quarters as Canandaigua were dominating the game but not really the score. It was 7-2 and I felt Canandaigua's offense was too much for Pittsford. King in goal was also having a great game. I was mistaken as I found out that Pittsford fought back to within 2 goals. That was as far as they got though and the Braves pulled out the victory 7-5. Click here for the rest of the pics...

On April 1st, the Penfield Patriots took on the Webster Thomas Titans at McAvoy Park. This was the best lacrosse game that I have seen so far this year. It was evenly matched as both teams traded the lead throughout the fourth quarter. The game went into overtime and was ended by JT Hauck of Thomas on a shot that sent him to the turf. At first, I thought he was protecting himself from being mobbed but noticed that everyone stopped when they got to him and that he was injured, Luckily, it was just a leg cramp and he eventually walked off the field smiling. After the Penfield-Thomas game on Thursday I decided to catch some of the Lightning-Barons game at 7pm. I only stayed for the first half because Brighton already had the game in hand at that point. It was 11-2 at half and Brighton ended up winning 17-5. Click here for the rest of the pics...

The last game of this blog was between the Gates-Chili Spartans and the Webster Thomas Titans at Gates. The Spartans look like a young, rebuilding team and it showed Saturday. Thomas came out on fire, scoring 10 in the first quarter while Gates did not score. Thomas ended up winning 20-6 with many players showing up on the scoresheet. I decided I wanted to finish off my first full high school sports season with a "best of" for each sport. I only shot a few wrestling matches for Gates-Chili this year, but I did shoot sectionals and super-sectionals. So here are my favorites for the 2008-2009 season.

Two Days of Softball

Saturday I was bored and wanted to get another girls softball game in. They were away at Brighton so I grabbed the equipment and drove there. Gates held up pretty well and the game was a pitching duel until the Barons broke through with a few runs in the 4th inning. I tried a few different angles to hopefully get a new portfolio shot. Didn't get that shot but some interesting photos.


Monday I shot some more softball but this time it was not a Gates Chili game. A parent asked me to come shoot the Northstar Christian Academy's pitcher. She is having a phenomenal season including a 22 strikeout extra inning game. She also had not allowed a walk all year. Of course, when I show up she didn't have her best game. Nonetheless, she was very impressive and I took alot of photos of both teams (they played Mercy).

Super Sectional Weekend

Last weekend was wrestling sectionals at Fairport High School for Division 1 Class AA. This weekend was Super Sectionals, where Section V's best from Division 1 and 2 showcase their talent to qualify for states. Some very impressive wrestlers from Section V. The unfortunate part was not being able to shoot the finals due to hockey sectionals taking place at the same time. I used the same remote method as last weekend and got a few decent photos.

High School Hockey Sectionals

Gates Chili opened their 2009 sectionals against Brighton/ER/HFL at Genesee Valley Ice Rink. They played very well shutting out their opponents 4-0. The one bright spot for Brighton was some of the great saves their goalie made. He really stood out facing over 30 shots on goal. The game got real chippy near the end, which turned into a fight between a couple players with a minute left in the game. Gates will face Fairport in the next round.

Sectionals: First Round (Brighton)

Super Saturday Part 1

Had a very long day of photography Saturday. I started at 9:00 am at RIT's Gordon Field House for the high school track and field event. The RIT Invitational contained many teams in and outside of Monroe County. I have never shot inside the field house so I just tryed to keep all the distractions out and shoot one thing at a time. Anyone who has been to one of these meets knows the commotion of all the different events going on at once.

I found myself trying to shoot as many Gates Chili participants as possible. This meant shooting the pole vault and then a 3200 meter runner as they passed me where I stand. It did get very crazy trying to get all the GC athletes, but I did my best. I also tryed to shoot some of the better athletes as they participated because you could possibly see these kids in an olympic setting sometime in the future. You never know.

Anyways it was very difficult because of the dim lighting, but a few photos came out relatively well with some noise ninja applied. I had to leave early (2 pm) because I had to be at the Chocolate Ball at 4:30 pm and still needed to charge the batteries and get dressed up. You can read about the ball in Super Saturday Part 2....

Skiing in the Woods

Had the chance to drive south of Rochester to Harriet Hollister Spencer Park near Hemlock Lake. The drive was for the opportunity to shoot some skiing. Not downhill skiing but nordic skiing. For those who have no clue what nordic skiing is, it is pretty much cross country skiing through the woods.

I finally got to the park and had to park along the road due to the very small parking lot taken up by the many school buses. With camera in hand and my backpack I followed the row of cars leading to the trail entrance. I walked through the woods with skiers everywhere warming up along the many small trails. I followed the major trail until I started to see cones and parents. I walked a while until I found a clearing with a view down towards Honeoye Lake. When I reached a decent position varsity girls started their race.

I was only there for two hours and came away with a few good shots. Well decent for never shooting any previous skiing before, especially nordic.
