The Gates-Chili Spartans opened up their football season against the Greece Athena Trojans at Greece Athena's field. There was alot of excitement on both sides of the field anticipating the start to the season. Gates has alot of questions about this years team with many AGR players leaving including last years Section V player of the year.
The cheerleaders started this game off with some opening numbers. This Spartan cheerleader showed off her backspring skills in front of the opening day crowd.

Greece Athena started with the ball and was stopped and forced to punt. Gates fumbled the punt and gave the Trojans great field position in which they scored the first touchdown of the day to lead 7-0. Najii Wilcox (24) was Athena's workhorse carrying the ball.

The Spartans sputtered out on there next possession as the QB through an interception. The Trojans did not score off the turnover but benefited a few plays later when GC was stopped deep in their zone again and then snapped the ball over the punters head for a safety.
Steve Wakefield (5) then added to the Trojans lead with a short field goal to make the score 12-0.

The game was plagued with turnovers. Gates Chili threw four interceptions and lost a fumble while Greece Athena lost one fumble shown here as Dave Howell (2) watches the ball get scooped up by a Gates defender.

The halftime score was 12-0 but still a close game in which anyone could come out on top. Najii Wilcox (24) continued to eat up yards and time in the second half as he ended the game with 33 carries for 124 yards and a touchdown on the ground.

Gates showed some life in the second half as Levester Tucker (28) had a 22 yard run with a additional 15 yard penalty tacked on for a facemask to put GC in great field position to score. Score they did, on a short pass into the back of the endzone to make it 12-7. Tucker finished with 78 yards on 13 carries.

Athena sealed the deal as the Trojans QB found WR Dave Howell (2) in the endzone to put them up 19-7. In this photo, Howell grabs the pass over cornerback CJ Hodge (12). The Trojans defense stood tall and kept GC running backs to limited yardage. Final score Greece Athena Trojans-19, Gates Chili Spartans-7.
