The start of the college year also brings about team pictures and head shots for media guides. The fall teams are usually shot in mid-August and include big sports like football and soccer. Here are some of the individual photos for the Brockport athletics website and media guides.

Here is the setup, a classroom is used in the athletics building. Photos taken with my blackberry.

The team photos were all done at a rushed pace so no lighting or flash was used. Most were outdoors except volleyball.

Fall Brockport Sports in Full Effect

The first couple of weeks of fall sports has been hectic. Shooting these events as early as possible for SUNY Brockport is essential for their college athletics website. They need art for each article that goes up after every event. Shooting each sport early can usually fulfill their needs for the first 3 or 4 weeks of photos to match articles. They also need photos early for media guides which includes headshots for their staff and athletes. Having the opportunity to shoot both headshots and sports for Brockport athletics keeps me very busy in late August and early September. High school sports take a back seat early in the fall season due to the many events for my contract sports.

I am hoping to be a little more informative of working both with a college photography contract and shooting on spec with high school sports and the differences between the two throughout this year. I will post some setup shots and head shots in the next blog. Also, I will add some of the team photos. Here is some of the early action from the first couple of weeks. Football Sectionals October 22nd

This was the opening of sectional football at Marina Auto Stadium. The first game was the Irondequoit Eagles v. Brockport Blue Devils in a Class AA Semifinal. Irondequoit dominated the game to a 44-12 victory. Click here for the rest of the photos....

The second game of the night was between the McQuaid Jesuit Knights and Webster Schroeder Warriors. This was the other Class AA Semifinal game. This was a much closer game as Schroeder was able to squeeze it out 27-25. Click here for the rest of the photos...

Gates-Chili Field Hockey

On October 21st, I shot a game between Gates-Chili and Penfield at the Spartans home field. I was there to get some shots to make some senior posters for the coach, but I also got to photograph a great moment for the Spartans team. I was able to capture a goal celebration for the Gates team. Most would say big deal, but if you know about the fairly new varsity field hockey team then you would understand. Goals do not come very often for the Spartans so this was great to catch, next year I am hopeing to catch a celebration for a win. Penfield did end up winning this one. INBF Bodybuilding Competition

The last event I had on Saturday, October 9th was a bodybuilding competition. I had a client that was looking for professional competition photos of his wife. The event was four hours long and at Greece Olympia H.S. There were only a few moments to shoot since there are many different categories and levels. Anyways here are a few that I liked from the shoot. There is no gallery for this client.

Gates-Chili Boys Soccer v. Spencerport X 2

The boys soccer teams from Gates-Chili and Spencerport played each other twice in back-to back days in October. Friday October 1st, I travelled to Nazareth to shoot the women's volleyball team against the Geneseo Blue Knights. The venue allowed me a couple of different angles I usually don't have available. SUNY Brockport football v. College of New Jersey

On September 25th, SUNY Brockport football took on the College of NJ Lions. The Golden Eagles took the early lead and held it for most of the game. The Lions came back with a few td's in the fourth quarter to tie the game. SUNY Brockport failed to score in the last few minutes and gave the Coll. of NJ a chance to win. The Lions gained just enough yards to set up their FG kicker with a 45 yarder. He made the FG with no time on the clock to defeat the Golden Eagles 24-21. Click here for the rest of the pics...

Brockport Women's Soccer v. Cazenovia

SUNY Brockport women's soccer took on the Cazenovia Wildcats at home. I had time so I set up a remote camera behind the goal. My pocketwizards (remotes) were giving me a little trouble so the camera behind the goal did not fire every time it was supposed to. I did capture a goal with it, but wasn't really happy with the performance of the remotes overall. The Brockport women beat Cazenovia 5-1. Click here for the rest of the photos...

Brockport Field Hockey v. Oneonta

On Saturday, Sept. 18th, the SUNY Brockport field hockey team took on SUNY Oneonta. This was my second time seeing the team play and the first half did not have much scoring. I stayed a few minutes into the second half but had to leave to shoot the football game in the next field over. Turns out most of the action and scoring picked up after I left. Quick blog on shooting the women's tennis team for the second time. This time I was able to shoot them at home....sort of. They are playing at Brockport High School since they knocked down the college courts because that is where the new SERC project is going. This was my first SUNY Brockport field hockey game of the year and needed to get a bunch of shots for the college. It was the ladies home opener as they took on the Golden Flyers of Nazareth. Gates Chili Soccer v. Hilton

Both the Gates-Chili girls and boys teams took on the cadets Tuesday and Wednesday evening last week.

Very dark and rainy night on Tuesday as the Cadets travelled to Gates-Chili to take on the Spartans in boys soccer. Gates-Chili had some early chances and seemed to have control during the first half of play. Late in the first half, Hilton scored on a deflection to go up 1-0. I left at half due to the loss of light and the look of some heavy weather coming in. Hilton ended up beating GC 1-0 as the game was called due to lightning with 16 mins. left in the 2nd half. Section V Football Opening Weekend

The start of the 2010 football season on Friday brought together two of the better teams in the last few years. Both teams lost a substantial amount of offense from the previous year. Hilton lost two huge impact players with the graduation of Duell Smith and Adam Gruschow. Gates-Chili lost two giants in the running game with Levester Tucker and Elijah Thomas moving on. I wasn't sure what I would see on the field Friday night.

It rained for the first half and Gates took advantage as Nick Kaminski scored two rushing td's to make it 14-0. The Spartans tacked on another score with a pass from Malcolm Frazier to Steve Tucciarello. Gates led 21-0 at halftime. Hilton bounced back with two rushing td's of their own by Mike Ingoglia in the second half and made what looked to be a blowout back into a close game. Gates offense was able to run out the remaining three minutes and hold on to the lead for a 21-14 victory. Click here for the rest of the pics...

I had a busy day Saturday but still made room to fit in 3 quarters of the RH v. Schroeder football game. It seems that both teams played this game a bit rusty making some mistakes on both sides of the ball. RH has been picked by many to be the top team in the county and they have a ton of weapons. Everyone knows about Broyld at QB but they have two great backs in (Christian) Harris and Barley. Wide receivers/DB's; Maio and Scissum are quick and play great on the defensive side in the secondary.

As for Schroeder, two players really stand out. McKnight is one of the top QB's in the league and is a dual threat. Guarino-Hyde is a returning AGR player on the line playing both ways.

The game was somewhat even for the first quarter and slowly RH picked up steam throught the next two. I left at the end of the third quarter with RH up 25-10 and was thinking the game was in hand. I found out later that Schroeder had a couple quick scores including a field goal to go up 26-25 with just over 30 seconds left. RH had a great kick return and a quick pass to Harris and turned the game back in RH's favor as they won 32-26. Click here for the rest of the pics...

Brockport Football Opener

Saturday night was SUNY Brockport's first football game of the year and they were at St. John Fisher to play the Cardinals. The Golden Eagles looked like they were going to be able to hang with the nationally ranked Cardinals early but St. John Fisher started to pull away in the second quarter. After the first quarter it was all Cardinals as they proved to be a dominant team in their first game of the year. St. John Fisher beat Brockport 55-12. Click here for the rest of the photos...

I was at Victor H.S. on Saturday, July 10th for both the boys and girls senior games. The girls started at 4pm and boys later at 6pm. There was a decent crowd that grew as the game went along. I was surprised at the lack of media to only a select few representatives. Both games had a very relaxed atmosphere as both the players and coaches seemed to be having a great time. 28th Annual Eddie Meath All-Star Game 2010

This year the game took place on a hot July 4th day. This was a much better played game than last year. It was good to see some improved sportsmanship by everyone involved. Girls State Softball

I covered a day of girls state softball games in Waterloo this year on June 12th for MaxPreps. I decided that I would post each game I covered even if they do not include a section V team.

The first game I covered included a section V team and was between Hoosick Falls (Sect. 2) v. Gananda (Sect. 5). Hoosick Falls started the scoring with two runs after some errors by Gananda. Gananda chipped in a run later but so did Hoosick Falls. Gananda looked like they were getting back in it only down a run (3-2) in the bottom of the sixth. They had a chance to tie but a runner was thrown out at home to end any threat and seal the victory for Hoosick Falls. They would advance to play Rhinebeck (Sect. 9) in the finals. The second game that I shot during the early hour was between the Livingston Manor Wildcats and the Germantown Lady Clippers of Class D. There was four fields used during the first few time blocks so I had to shoot two games going on at the same time while another MaxPreps photog shot the other two. I only was able to shoot the last few innings of this game but the Livingston Manor pitcher (Marissa Diescher) was throwing a no-hitter. There were a few errors by the Wildcats that had produced a run for Germantown. The end score was 4-1 and Livingston Manor moved on to the finals with a no-hitter. The next group of games that I photographed started with a Class AA Semifinal between CNS and North Rockland. I had never seen a team with as many lefty hitters as CNS (7 lefties) in a lineup. Not only were they mostly lefty but all seemed to run and slap hit to get on. The strategy didn't seem to work through six innings as they were down 1-0 but in the bottom of the seventh with 2 outs CNS strung 5 straight hits together to walk off to the finals. I was only able to shoot the first couple of innings between Pearl River and Floral Park, since there was a final I needed to cover playing at the same time. The game was a pitching duel which is funny to say since most teams have unbelievable pitchers when they get to this point. Pearl River ended up winning 2-0 and moving on to the Class A final against Pittsford Mendon. Click here for the rest of the pics...

Olean looked very strong in this game and put away Dobbs Ferry with a 5-0 win. I did not see the first few innings but the last couple were quick as Olean's pitcher was dominant throwing a one hitter. Olean moved on to the finals to play Chenango Valley. Click here for the rest of the pics...

The next game I covered was great. I was able to see the last few innings of the game before Livingston Manor ended a 1-1 tie with a base hit in the seventh. The Wildcats (Sect. 9) scored the run in the seventh inning to edge the Bolivar-Richburg Wolverines 2-1 and win the Class D Championship. Click here for the rest of the pics...

Last game of the day and once again, great pitching by both teams. Bay Shore was able to break through and score a few runs as CNS was held scoreless. CNS could only scrounge up two hits against Bay Shore's pitcher Liz Weber. Weber's outstanding pitching led Bay Shore to a 4-0 victory and the Class AA Championship. Boys Lacrosse Sectionals

I was able to capture a few sectional quarterfinals, semifinals, and all three Section V championships.

The first sectional game was on May 27th, 2010. This was a great matchup on paper as the usual lacrosse powerhouse Irondequoit Eagles took on the surprise team of Class B, the McQuaid Jesuit Knights. McQuaid had an outstanding year but couldn't stop Irondequoit's offense early. Greg Coholan (pictured) had 5 goals for Irondequoit as they took down the higher seed 14-9. Class A scheduled two semifinal games at SpencerportH.S. on Tuesday, June 1st. The first game was between the Red Raiders and Royal Comets. Fairport started with a four goal lead after 1 quarter. RH played Fairport pretty even for the next 2 quarters keeping it close. The Royal Comets could not keep up with the great defense and goaltending of Fairport. Fairport's offense was top notch as usual too as they move on to the championship game. Fairport 15, RH 9. Click here for the rest of the pics....

The second game on June 1st was between Pittsford and Penfield. Pittsford poured on the offense early scoring 8 goals in the first quarter against Penfield. The winner would move on to the Section V Class A Championship game at St. John Fisher. The Panthers never looked back shutting down the Penfield offense and beating the Patriots 18-4. The start of three finals was on June 4th, 2010 at St. John Fisher College. The first game was between Aquinas and Penn Yan. Aquinas started off strong with early goals. Billy Lombardi dominated the face-offs and it never really got close. Aquinas wins the Class C Championship 14-9 and move on into the state brackets. Click here for the rest of the pics...

The second game was between Webster Thomas and Irondequoit on Friday June 4th. Thomas scored the first couple goals of the game and looked like they were on there way to a big lead. Irondequoit fought back and poured it on led by Mike Utz who had 7 goals and won the MVP. The Eagles won the Class B championship with a 16-13 score over the Titans. The last game at St. John Fisher was between the Red Raiders and the Panthers. I really was most excited to see this game because I thought it would be the closest of the three. I was disappointed as Fairport was too strong for Pittsford. Their offense is incredible, but I have now seen their goalie (Blaze Riorden) twice and have to say he impressed me the most this year. Not only is the sophomore great in the net, he came out of the net in this game to score a goal. Fairport wins 10-3. Click here for the rest of the pics...

Baseball and Sectionals

On May 20th of this year, Aquinas played McQuaid at McQuaid H.S. I was expecting a better game between these two teams on that Thursday but the Knights worked the Aquinas pitching to score 7 runs. Aquinas could only muster 1 run against the Knights' pitcher Nate Harris. McQuaid with a good win over the Irish 7-1. Click here for the rest of the pics...

The next day, Friday May 21st, was my last game to shoot before sectionals began and it had two teams battling for the division. Victor's hitting started off hot knocking the starting pitcher for Sutherland out early. Sutherland did make a run, putting some hits together but not enough before the rain came down. The first of two games on June 3rd, was between McQuaid and Webster Thomas for the Class AA title. The Titans pitcher, Cam Scalzo, started off great and actually carried a no hitter through four innings keeping a 1-0 game. He eventually gave up a string of hits that gave McQuaid a 3-1 lead. Nate Harris pitched outstanding for McQuaid and was given the MVP as the Knights won 4-1. Click here for the rest of the pics...

The second game on that Thursday night was between Churchville-Chili v. Penfield for the Class AAA title. Both pitchers were outstanding but Rob Mabee from the Patriots outlasted Jordan Eich to get the victory and MVP award. Penfield won 5-3 and took the Section V Class AAA crown. I was able to fit in the first half of a girls lacrosse game on Thursday, May 6th. The girls of Arcadia/Olympia took on the Spartans at Gates. The game started as the sun was going down casting a nice orange glow on the field and players. The Lightning won by the score of 16-13. Click here for the rest of the pics...

I shot another first half of Gates-Chili girls lacrosse and this time they were up against the Monarchs from Mercy on May 10th. Mercy played very good to start and went up big with a bunch of goals in the first half. The Monarchs ended up winning 17-10. Click here for the rest of the pics...

First of the spring sectional games was on Saturday May 22nd at Gates-Chili as they took on the Thunder. The game was close as both teams seemed to be pretty even. Gates broke a tie score late and held onto the ball for the last minute to advance in the brackets with a 12-11 score. Click here for the rest of the pics...

The first of two Class A semifinal games played at Brighton on May 28th was between the Patriots and Royal Comets. This game was back and forth as each team matched the other with goals. The game was determined on a penalty shot by Penfield with :02 seconds left. Penfield scored to go up 8-7 and the RH coach was not happy. He was given a red card and the Patriots moved onto the finals. Click here for the rest of the pics...

This was the second semifinal game of the night at Brighton. The first was close, but this game was closer going three overtimes before Pittsford scored in sudden death(victory). Both teams fought hard and both scored a goal in the second OT as Pittsford won 11-10. Click here for the rest of the pics...

I think on this day April 8th, I wanted to photograph a baseball game but the weather was not cooperating like the previous two days. I decided to make sure to get a game in by shooting a lacrosse game because they usually don't get rained out. I decided on the Saints and Warriors who played at Churchville-Chili's stadium. While the weather stayed decent I was able to catch a great game between the two teams. Schroeder pulled out a victory 8-6. Click here for the rest of the pics...

On April 13th, I was able to shoot the first half of Brockport at Gates-Chili as the sun was setting. Some really nice color in a bunch of the shots but had to work with some odd shadows too. Gates took control early and won by the score of 16-4. Click here for the rest of the pics...

I was in Hawaii for a week and I came back to a great game between Aquinas and Penn Yan on April 29th. Penn Yan started off quick and it looked like they might runaway with this one. Aquinas came back with a streak of goals in the second quarter to close the gap. Penn Yan played an outstanding second half to stay ahead and finish off the Irish. The Spartans played Brighton on May 1st and played great and actually tied the Barons late in the game at 10 a piece. I was very impressed with the comeback as I have seen both teams play this year and thought GC would not be able to keep it close. The Barons scored 2 late goals in the 4th quarter to retake the lead and get the win. Final score; Brighton 12, Gates-Chili 10. Girls Softball

I plan on updating my blog with all the games that I was busy with during the spring. The summer is a slowdown period for photography and hopefully it will give me time to catch up on a lot of things.

I did not get a chance to shoot too much softball this year. Here are some of the galleries from Section V. I will have another blog later with a bunch of galleries from states. The first softball game of the year for me was Gates-Chili v. Eastridge. The Spartans and Lancers played at Gates-Chili on May 4th. It was a good game but I did not stay the entire game as I had to get home. Eastridge ended up beating Gates in the end. Click here for the rest of the pics...

The next game was also at GCand put them up against Greece Athena. Greece Athena showed their power against Gates-Chili on that Friday beating them 9-1. The Trojans were led by Nina Korn who went 3 for 4 with 2 home runs. This girl has a great swing with some serious power. Click here for the rest of the pics...

The third Gates game was between Gates and Olympia. The classic Spartans v. Spartans matchup was on a Wednesday at Gates-Chili. Olympia's pitching stifled the Gates-Chili girls and Olympia brought out the bats as they won 16-2. Click here for the rest of the pics...

I was able to get in an early round sectional game that did not involve Gates-Chili. Wayne travelled to Thornell Park to take on Pittsford Mendon on a Thursday night. Danielle Grage threw a no hitter against the Eagles. While the pitching was great for Mendon, they also put together some rallies to win 10-0. Click here for the rest of the pics...

Spring Baseball

Finally was able to get a baseball game in amongst all of these lacrosse games. The East Orientals took on the Spencerport Rangers at Spencerport on April 4th. The game stayed pretty close through the first 5 innings that I was able to photograph. Spencerport ended up tacking on a bunch of runs at the end to win 8-2. Click here for the rest of the pics...

One week I'm sweating from the heat and the next week, like on Friday, it's snowing during a baseball game. I was prepared for the cold Friday afternoon but it definitely slowed down the hitting early. Pittsford Sutherland took on the Irondequoit Eagles at Irondequoit on April 9th. Most of the runs were scored late innings as the teams warmed up (but not the weather). Sutherland won the game 8-4 and the weather made me think that my Hawaii trip couldn't come soon enough. Saturday, April 10th was a beautiful day and I was able to photograph two different games. The first was baseball at Rush Henrietta as they took on Honeoye Falls-Lima. Tough game for the Royal Comets as they lost to a powerful HFL team 16-3. Click here for the rest of the pics...

Arcadia travelled to Gates to take on the Spartans on April 12th. Gates strung some hits together to give them a decent lead and had some strong pitching to win 8-3. Click here to see the pics...

This was the last game I saw before going on vacation a few weeks ago. The game was played between the Cadets and Trojans on April 14th. Hilton's hitting impressed me as they were putting up runs almost every inning. There was a scary moment in the game when one of Athena's infielders was hit in the neck by a throw. He seemed ok as he was helped off the field. Hilton ended up winning the game 11-0. Click here for the rest of the pics...

I was glad to see these teams had their aces going for them when I arrived. I missed seeing Eich last year and wanted to get a chance to photograph him pitching. Wandtke for GC was great too, the only runs scored were due to some errors in the infield by the Spartans. Eich and the Saints came out on top 2-0. Click here for the rest of the photos...

The weather in the last week has been less than sunny and on Friday it looked like the clouds were going to drop some serious rain or snow. The sky opened up in certain areas over Gates creating a small hole in the dark sky. The game did only have a few sprinkles but the threat was always there. Hilton ended up beating Gates 14-5. I had to shoot some more portraits in Canandaigua last Saturday, so I was able to shoot the Victor v. Canandaigua baseball game. The weather was windy with a little bit of rain falling for the first 6 innings. The Braves had taken an early lead but Victor came back to tie it at 4 sending the game into extra innings. Victor scored a run in the top of the seventh but hail stopped the game in the bottom of the inning. The game was called a tie. Click here for the rest of the pics...

Spring Girls Lacrosse

After a quick portrait session for NSR on Wednesday March 31st, I drove over to McAvoy Park where the Canandaigua Braves were playing the Webster Thomas Titans in girls lacrosse. It was good to see some of the impressive girl college recruits in the area. The Braves ended up beating the Titans 17-8 but both teams showed talent on offense and defense. After the Gates-Thomas boys game on April 3rd, I drove to Eastridge to see the girls lacrosse team take on Aquinas. I also wanted to see the new stadium. It looks like the new turf field is going to be really nice. Parts of the stadium are still under construction, they were using a small scoreboard instead of the new one. The baseball and softball fields also are not complete yet...the facilities do look top notch so far. The game was close and Aquinas ended up scoring twice to break a tie at the end to win 11-9. After the RH v. HFL baseball game on Saturday April 10th, I photographed the girls lacrosse game between RH and Fairport. The sun was shining and both teams were playing well as Fairport had a run early. RH answered with a litle run of their own but couldn't keep up with Fairport as the Red Raiders won 14-11. Early Spring Lacrosse

Spring season started with a string of boys lacrosse games. Here is a few to get my blog going again. The first game of the year was between the Bath Haverling Rams and the Mynderse Academy Blue Devils played at the Aquinas Institute on March 27th. Bath took control right away and was up big before giving up some late goals. I was excited to get back outside to shoot even if it was cold early. It did warm up by the start of the second game. Bath beat Mynderse 18-7. Click here for the rest of the pics...

The second game on Saturday put St. Francis from section 6 up against the home team Aquinas L'il Irish. St. Francis beat Bishop Kearney the day before 14-3, but section 5 had it's revenge through the Irish. I was only able to shoot the first half and Aquinas was pouring on the offense and up 8-0 when I left. The game ended with Aquinas winning 14-2. Click here for the rest of the pics...

On Monday, March 29th, the Honeoye Falls-Lima Cougars took on the Fairport Red Raiders at Fairport. The game started with a somewhat cloudy day and was overcast. Fairport scored early and often and led 13-1 at halftime. Fairport switched goalies at half and the scoring continued into the third. I left for the Canandaigua/Pittsford game after three quarters because Fairport was ahead 15-2. The game ended 16-4. Click here for the rest of the pics...

After the Fairport-HFL game, I drove over to Nazareth college for the Canandaigua-Pittsford game. I stayed 3 quarters as Canandaigua were dominating the game but not really the score. It was 7-2 and I felt Canandaigua's offense was too much for Pittsford. King in goal was also having a great game. I was mistaken as I found out that Pittsford fought back to within 2 goals. That was as far as they got though and the Braves pulled out the victory 7-5. Click here for the rest of the pics...

On April 1st, the Penfield Patriots took on the Webster Thomas Titans at McAvoy Park. This was the best lacrosse game that I have seen so far this year. It was evenly matched as both teams traded the lead throughout the fourth quarter. The game went into overtime and was ended by JT Hauck of Thomas on a shot that sent him to the turf. At first, I thought he was protecting himself from being mobbed but noticed that everyone stopped when they got to him and that he was injured, Luckily, it was just a leg cramp and he eventually walked off the field smiling. After the Penfield-Thomas game on Thursday I decided to catch some of the Lightning-Barons game at 7pm. I only stayed for the first half because Brighton already had the game in hand at that point. It was 11-2 at half and Brighton ended up winning 17-5. Click here for the rest of the pics...

The last game of this blog was between the Gates-Chili Spartans and the Webster Thomas Titans at Gates. The Spartans look like a young, rebuilding team and it showed Saturday. Thomas came out on fire, scoring 10 in the first quarter while Gates did not score. Thomas ended up winning 20-6 with many players showing up on the scoresheet. Ronald McDonald All-Star Girls and Boys Basketball

The next weekend I shot some more high school all-star basketball games. Clark gym at RIT hosted the boys and girls Ronald McDonald senior games. The athletes were very impressive and it was fun for everyone involved. I definitely will try to make these games every year. Monroe County Senior Select Saturday

I shot three all-star games on Saturday, March 20th. I started at Blue Cross Arena for the Section V Senior Select hockey game. I stayed for two periods and sat in a few different spots getting some different angles. Click here to see the rest of the photos...

I then drove to Gates-Chili High School for the Monroe County Senior Select girls and boys basketball games. Both games were fun to watch and at halftime that had an event for each game. The girls had a 3-point shooting contest and the winner was Jenna Hoecker (Greece Olympia). Each team had an MVP. The East MVP was Lindsay McKinnon (Fairport) and the west MVP was Brittany Quataert (Greece Athena). Click here to see the rest of the girls photos...

Sectional Giant Slalom Skiing

On February 8th, I drove to Bristol mountain and shot the early boys sectional skiing. I stayed for both runs of the giant slalom and I always have a good time when I'm there. It was chilly early but the sun came out for the second run. Click here for all the photos of the boys participants....

Hockey Sectionals

I was able to shoot 2 sectional quarterfinal hockey games at Genesee Valley Ice Rink on February 20th. The first game was Gates-Chili v. Hilton. I walked in a few minutes late to see that it was already 2-1 and Gates had the lead. The Spartans exploded offensively in the second period and Hilton could not weather the storm. Tough defeat for the Cadets and Gates moved on to face the Lightning with a 7-1 win. Click here for the rest of the pics...

The second game was much better. Aquinas was playing the higher seed McQuaid. Both teams scored a goal in the first period and it stayed tied until the third. Each team had a goal disallowed including a goal Aquinas scored with 4 minutes left in the game. Aquinas bounced back after the disallowed goal to score with about two minutes left and win 2-1. Section V Wrestling Super Sectionals

I am finally getting to the end of my editing for the winter season and some of the galleries were being finished slowly. Skiing and wrestling took up a bunch of my time for sectionals this year. Anyways, I photographed the semifinals and finals at RIT in the Gordon Fieldhouse but mostly division 1. The semifinals were held early in the day on the 13th of February. Here are a few shots. The End of Winter Basketball

Catching up on the winter season and I will start with basketball. Here are the last basketball games of the season that I covered in February. The first boys game of February was not a very well played game by either team. It was February 3rd, and the Gates boys took on the Spencerport Rangers. The Rangers were up for most of the game. Gates fought back late to squeak this one out 48-44. Click here for the rest of the pics...

Two days later, February 5th, the Spartans took on Greece Athena at home. Both teams started this game off slowly in the first quarter. Athena started hitting their shots and finding the open man. Greece pulled away in the second half as their big man underneath really played well. The Trojans won 59-51. Click here for the rest of the pics...

On February 8th, Greece Olympia boys came to the Gates-Chili field house. This was a very even paced game that Olympia took over in the last few minutes. Great action by both teams. I was impressed by a couple very athletic kids on Olympia that I had not heard about. Olympia beat Gates 61-55. Click here for the rest of the pics...

It was the girls turn on February 9th as the Pittsford Sutherland Knights took on the Gates-Chili Spartans. The Gates-Chili girls showed that they could play with anyone Tuesday night as they defeated a great Sutherland team. The Spartans kept O'Keefe from scoring big in the second half and made their foul shots to win 63-58. Click here for the rest of the photos...

I traveled to Rush-Henrietta on February 12th for a great boys game between Fairport and RH. I scheduled this game a couple weeks ago because I had an opening and knew it was going to be a great game. I wasn't disappointed as both teams carried leads at one time and battled back and forth late. Taggart for Fairport showed his stuff with 31 points and McClain was huge inside. The end came when RH could not finish in the last few minutes and the Red Raiders pulled away. Click here for the rest of the pics...

On February 15th, 2010 I drove to Oakfield-Alabama for girls senior night. I was asked to shoot the girls senior night at OA just like the boys last week. The game took place in the elementary school and is a little smaller than the high school gym. The Oakfield girls were able to get the ball inside and score consistently as they beat Alexander 46-40. The last basketball game of February was the girls senior night at Gates-Chili as they took on the Brockport Blue Devils. Brockport stayed tough with Gates early as both teams struggled to keep the lead. The Blue Devils hit a flurry of three's to pull ahead and the inside girls worked hard to keep that lead. January Basketball and Hockey

I want to catch up now that winter session is beginning to slow down. Saturday, Jan. 16th the Gates-Chili hockey team took on the Liverpool Warriors from Section 6. The game was very physical with a surplus of penalties and Liverpool had a very difficult time controlling the puck on the offensive end. The Spartans offense was too quick to the puck and put a lot of pressure on the Warriors goalie (who was outstanding). Click here for the rest of the pics from the game...

On Wednesday, January 20th, I was at Gates-Chili's gym to shoot both JV and Varsity boys basketball games. The Spartans were taking on the Brockport Blue Devils. This game was fairly easy for Gates once Imes, Brockport's big man, got in foul trouble early. Not sure how much better of a game it would have been if he was able to play more. Two days later, Gates played Friday night against the Hilton Cadets. This was a great game as both teams played hard and it seemed to be a tale of two halves. Hilton started hot beating Gates to the basket and scoring often. Gates didn't seem to have the scoring touch until the second half where they fought back to take the lead. Thursday the 28th of January, there was another great hockey game involving the Gates and Greece teams. This time it was the Lightning facing the Spartans at Lakeshore Ice Rink. Gates-Chili led for most of the game but Greece tied it up in the third and went ahead with a little over 3 mins left in the game. The Lightning held on to win 4-3. Girls basketball played on Friday the 29th against Greece Arcadia. Gates girls fought hard through this game and almost pulled off the upset as they lost 53-52. This was the most physical girls basketball game I have ever witnessed. The inside girls battled for every loose ball and rebound. The young Gates' guards were great again for the Spartans. I have been shooting a lot of girls and boys basketball and the first two weeks of the new year wasn't any different. January 5th, the girls of Gates-Chili dominated Spencerport with a 63-37 win. Click here for the photos...

The 12th of January, I traveled to Wheatland-Chili where they took on the boys of Oakfield-Alabama. It was an exciting game but the Wildcats pulled out the victory at the end 47-44. Click here for the photos...

The next day, January 13th, I was back at Gates-Chili's gym were the boys took on Churchville-Chili. The Saints were without their best player and the Spartans took advantage with an easy win 60-27. Click here for the photos...

On Friday, January 15th, the lady Spartans took on the Greece Olympia Spartans. I took photos of both the JV and Varsity teams this night. The young varsity guards for Gates were great as they took control quickly and beat the Greece team 79-57. Click here for the photos...

Gates Hockey v. Thunder

This was definitely one of the best high school hockey games I have seen in a long time. The game started late because the Greece Thunder was raising their state title banner that night. They had a slideshow presentation along with the banner unveiling. When the game started Gates-Chili scored twice early in the first period. The second period started with another goal for the Spartans but the Thunder came back with two of their own. In the third, Greece tied the game up and it went into OT. Just when it looked like no one would score in the overtime period, GC scored with 2 seconds left (the clock actually read :00) but the scoresheet said 4:58. Holiday Girls Basketball

Gates-Chili's new gym hosted a Holiday girls basketball tournament that included three other teams. The first game was between Sweet Home(Section 6) and Edison Tech. The Panthers had some tall girls on the inside that really gave Edison trouble. The Inventors did keep it close early but it wasn't enough as Sweet Home pulled away to win 62-23. The battle of Chili was the second game of the tournament. Gates played well early even with some foul trouble to take a lead. Churchville's guard play kept them in the game but the Spartans paint work was too much as they won 71-53. Click here for the rest of the photos...

Wrestling: Gates v. Irondequoit

Gates-Chili took on the Irondequoit Eagles just before Christmas on the 23rd of December at Gates. I tried a different lighting technique by setting one flash on the second floor and a strobe next to me pointed straight up to bounce off the ceiling. Some results came out really nice but it wasn't enough light to completely stop the action, a few photos had some motion blur. Gates Basketball v. Hilton and Arcadia

Basketball season officially started for me Tuesday night as the the Lady Spartans took on the Lady Cadets at Gates-Chili H.S. Hilton came out strong early with a 15 point lead and held onto to a double digit lead most of the game. Gates fought back to bring it within three points with a great full court press. The Spartans couldn't hit some important buckets late and Hilton held on for the win 55-48. Click here for the rest of the pics...

The Gates-Chili boys varsity team played Arcadia also a few days later Friday night. This was a very sloppy game played by the Spartans as they went down early in the first half by double digits. They fought back just like the girls did earlier in the week but they couldn't get enough stops to slow down the Titans. Arcadia finished off the Gates team with a 55-49 score. Fairport hockey took on McQuaid in a tournament Saturday, December 12th at Genesee Valley Park Rink. The Red Raiders started off slow but quickly turned on the offense in the second period. They ended up defeating the Knights 5-0. Click here for the rest of the gallery...

After the Fairport-McQuaid game, Gates faced off against Thomas. Both teams came into the game undefeated and looking to continue their hot streaks. On December 8th, I planned to cover two Gates-Chili Sporting events. First, the boys swimming team took on Penfield at the new facility. It was early enough so that I could go home eat and come back for wrestling. Here are a few from early in the afternoon. Click here for the rest...

The wrestling team was taking on Holley at 8 PM. I was back at the high school around 7:30 to find out the matches had already started. I asked and found out that it was changed to a 6:30 start. Winter Session Begins

Winter session is off and running with hockey and wrestling last week. First, Gates-Chili took on Victor at Genesee Valley Park in their first hockey game of the year. The team is solid with some very quick goal scorers and a stifling defense. They beat Victor 4-1 to start the year and have continued to win early this year. Tonight they go up against Webster Thomas. Click here for shots from the game.

Wrestling for Gates-Chili had a tough start as they took on the powerful Spencerport Rangers. The Spartans lost the match but still have some great wrestlers back from last year and a few new ones. I see this team improving from last year and some individuals that could do some damage all the way into states. Click here to see the rest of the shots.

Last Football of the Year

My last two football games for the year did not involve a section V team. Both games were for a chance to move on to the Carrier Dome in Syracuse, NY for the finals. The first game was between Randolph and Groton. I knew this game would be tough to shoot because Randolph does not pass and the photos would be pretty monotonous. The second game was between Sweet Home and Whitesboro. This game would be the opposite of the first as Sweet Home has very athletic receivers and a dangerous offense.

Since this was the end of football, I looked back at all the games I did this year. I was at 29 football games this year, saw 34 different teams, 2 camps, and 1 JV game. I think I have seen enough football for the year, time for winter session. Click here to see the state semifinal galleries...

Section 6 v. Section 5 Football

After the section 5 championships the previous weekend comes the western regionals where sections 5 and 6 battle to move on. This year like last was not a good one for section 5 as the Buffalo area teams dominated those from the Rochester area. The only section 5 team to move on was Hornell. Sectional Football and the Importance of Camera Backup

Friday night at Gates-Chili was the start of sectional play for class AA football. GC was taking on Brockport in the quarterfinals. The Spartans were at home and just like when they faced the Blue Devils two weeks ago the weather was miserable. The weather progressively worsened to a sideways cold rain as the game went along. Gates took an early lead and by half were up 21-0.

I got in my car at halftime to dry off my flash, gloves, and hat and contemplated leaving right then. I decided to stick it out a little longer to make sure the score didn't change in Brockport's favor. It was a bad idea because the rain began to fall even harder to the point where the camera was losing focus on the players. I had enough and packed up early and later found out GC won 21-7. I did not get many photos from the game but the shot below is probably the best flash football shot I have taken to this date.

I walked into Marina Auto Stadium early before the 11:00 am game to get ready for a day of shooting sectional football. I planned to shoot the early game and then drive to Aquinas get that game in at 2pm and back to the stadium for the late game. Everything started well shooting warm ups and the first quarter. Well, half way through the second quarter my camera quit on me. I no longer have a backup so I was off to see if I could get it fixed. Long story short my camera is off to the shop for 2 weeks and I looking for a replacement for next weekend. I still took a bunch of photos but no celebration on the game winning kick as Cal-Mum defeated Clyde 17-14 in OT. Hopefully I will have a new camera this week.

Junior Varsity Sports

Last week I wanted to fit in a few JV matches for Gates-Chili. I try to get at least one game in for some of the sports but it doesn't always happen. Anyways I shot the girls JV soccer team a week ago and decided to catch the boys too. I only shot the first half between Gates and Olympia because available light has become scarce in NY after 5:30 PM. The JV team was very good and had many scoring opportunities early with no results. Here two players get tangled battling for the loose ball.

The battle for the ball continues in the air as two players jump for a header.

Later that week I also shot the JV football team as they took on Penfield. These Spartans also were dominating early as I watched them score early and often. After three quarters I had enough shots to put up a decent gallery for the team. The offense had it's normal Gates-Chili format of running the ball numerous times with great results.

The defense stifled the Patriots offense to get the ball back to their run heavy offense.

Gates Senior Football Night

The fans were out last Friday night as GC took on the Fairport Red Raiders on the Spartans senior night. The setup for introducing the seniors was all messed up as the seniors and parents lined up along the field. Only half the field was used and the line was too long to fit everyone making it a photography nightmare to get everyone. Next time I will bring a shorter lens to get them as soon as they begin to walk. Gates won easily 34-14 to continue their win streak of 4 in a row entering sectionals.

Saturday morning I was in Pittsford to see the Panthers take on the Canandaigua Braves. It was a very close game as both offenses struggled to score. The rain starting coming down in the second quarter and was steady until the end. Canandaigua ended up winning in the fourth quarter on a quarterback run left for about 60 yards for the score. The game ended Braves 13, Panthers 10.

Sunday I finished off the weekend with my last regular season games of Chili Lions football. This day I was shooting the Purple Mitey Mites and the Junior Midgets. This ends another great season with the Lions and finally a decent weather day which did not occur many times on 2009 Sundays.

October Football Weekend

I started the weekend off with a cold and rainy miserable night game at Gates-Chili. The Spartans were taking on the Brockport Blue Devils who were playing without there starting running back. I didn't find this out until game time and was upset that I didn't get an opportunity to get some shots of him. Gates ended up winning 40-13 as the Blue Devils had no answer for their powerful running game.

Levester Tucker (28) and Elijah Thomas (32) ran all over the Blue Devils on the ground and the Spartans moved to 4-2 on the season.

Saturday morning I took the long drive to Dundee to see them face off against South Seneca. Dundee dominated the first half scoring early and often with the ground game. South Seneca made it a little closer in the second half with 3 passing touchdowns. The Scotsman pulled it out though and the final score was 34-19.

Boys and Girls Soccer v. Spencerport

Thursday, the Gates-Chili boys took on the Spencerport Rangers soccer team at Gates stadium. I walked in just as the game started and was only able to stay for the first half. It gets darker much earlier now late in the season and the stadium lights don't help at all. Some photographers have told me they are now the worst in the county. Anyways, not much happened in the first half but after I left Spencerport scored twice to win 2-0.

I like this shot of the Gates team making a wall on the direct kick. Everyone is moving except #10 who is standing firm. The funny part is the ball hit #10 on the kick.

Friday I decided to shoot the girls soccer team before the night football game. I knew this was the last 4:30 game for them and wanted to get shots with decent light. I was wrong as the rain fell hard all night and there were extremely dark skies. I only shot a few photos that were acceptable before the darkness was too much. They were also playing against Spencerport like the boys the following night. Spencerport has some great players and are a top team this year. The Rangers ended up winning 3-1 but Gates showed some toughness at the end scoring once and having some other close chances.

It was wet and slippery on the field as the rain was steady the whole game. Here a Ranger player gets a spike into a Spartans defender.

Busy Week of October Sports

As usual, I am running way behind because of a ton of photos and work this week. I am bunching the last week of shoots together to get me caught up. I am really trying to fit in the rest of the GC sports so no one is left out and increase my galleries on MaxPreps. I also am shooting other schools and working with a few papers and that is also taking away some of my time for this blog.

Last blog I mentioned shooting soccer Monday and Wednesday. Tuesday was a day of shooting cross country. I was able to shoot my first running of the year and it took a toll on the whole week. The number of photos and edits took so long to finish it backed up all the rest of my galleries for the week. Anyways, check out the boys and girls varsity cross country shots by going to the gallery down below. The teams included the Gates-Chili Spartans, Pittsford Mendon Vikings, Batavia Blue Devils, Greece Odyssey Leopards, and Churchville-Chili Saints. The meet took place in Greece at Basil Marella Park.

Thursday and Friday were days off due to weather and a cancellation but still I was behind on my edits. Saturday, I woke up early and shot Gates girls soccer as they took on the Hilton Cadets. As I arrived, I noticed that one of the Hilton players was on the ground being tended to. The Hilton goalie was hurt during pre-game and left the field for medical care. Hilton used there back-up and Gates took advantage to win 2-0.

After the soccer game was homecoming football at Gates-Chili as they welcomed Irondequoit in for a 3:00 pm game. The game was as expected and Gates took a big lead with their powerful running game. On a side note, Irondequoit's starting QB did not dress for the game and GC's defense harassed the back-up all game. The end score was Spartans 34, Eagles 0.

Sunday I was up early again to a cloudy, rainy day of Chili Lions football. I shot two games and went right home to continue on with my edits.

Monday, I wanted to get one more gallery of tennis before their season ended. I was able to photograph a few sets of Gates first round sectional match against Greece Lightning which combines Arcadia and Olympia. They ended up moving on in their bracket with a 6-1 win.

Tuesday, I knew East Rochester field hockey was going to be playing Gates at home and wanted to get some shots of this amazing team. They have been the top team in this area and New York state for a while now. I knew the game would not be close as GC lost 9-0.

Cold Weather Soccer

This week the temperature has dipped down into sweatshirt and raincoat weather. I shot two soccer games this week and the weather was horrible Monday for the Gates-Chili boys game against Hilton. It started as a cold late afternoon game but took a turn for the worse as the rain and wind kicked in. I was prepared for the rain with my rain pants, jacket, and most importantly a thinktank camera cover. Everything stayed dry so the protection did its job and I took some cool photos of the rain affecting the play. Gates ended up losing 2-0 in this horrible Rochester weather.

Wednesday, I drove over to Rush Henrietta high school were they took on #1 Penfield in boys soccer. Again, the weather was cold but the rain never showed up for this one. It was overcast with some dark clouds which produced some rich saturated photos. RH scored an early goal that stood after one half of play. I planned on leaving at halftime but with a chance of an upset I decided to stick around longer. Ten minutes into the second half Penfield tied up the game. I decided it was time to go, but found out later that RH scored again to upset Penfield. I was upset I missed probably a decent celebration but I wasn't as prepared for the cold. I knew I made the right decision because I already was feeling the effects of a cold.

Once again I am behind on my blog and editing. I should be catching up quick with a day coming up without an event. Here's a composite blog of Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.

Friday night Gates beat Churchville in volleyball 3-0.

Saturday morning I shot a boys soccer game before the Gates football game. The soccer match put two great teams together. On this sunny morning Fairport was playing at Pittsford Mendon. Mendon ended up beating Fairport 2-0.

After the game I drove to Spencerport for their homecoming football game against Gates-Chili. Gates-Chili scored often and played great defense to win 34-0.

Finally on Sunday my long weekend finished with a long day of Chili Lions football at Memorial park.

Boys Soccer Week (con't)

Thursday I continued my week of boys soccer with a game between the Greece Athena Trojans and Churchville-Chili Saints. It was a great game that provided some interesting shots as the two teams struggled for control. Athena scored first early in the first half. Churchville came right back about a minute later and tied the game at one. The teams didn't score again as they headed into overtime and finished tied.

Boys Soccer Week

I am running behind of course but, Monday and Tuesday I had boys soccer games to shoot. I also will be shooting one more Thursday so it kind of feels like a total soccer week. I am finishing up the last few games shooting for Churchville-Chili, so Monday they faced Dr. Freddie Thomas and Tuesday was Gates-Chili. They beat Freddie Thomas with a marginal victory and won a tight game at Gates. Here are some shots from the first two days of the week.

The first game was at 4:30 and the sun was already getting low giving somewhat of a orange glow on the players. Here a Freddie Thomas attacker does his best imitation of Pele'.

Churchville-Chili's goalie just gets a piece of this ball as it goes off the crossbar and behind the net.

The Gates game was at 6:00 and the sun was not showing on the field once the game began. I probably have said this before but, the Spartans field is not the place to take pictures when the sun goes down. I knew I could only get to about halftime where the pictures would just be a waste of time due to the poor lighting. I quickly shot as many action pics a s possible until the ambient light was gone. Gates scored first but Churchville ended up tieing the game in the second half and taking the lead with ten minutes left for the win.

I am really starting to get some of the timing down to catch some great headers. Hopefully there will be more to come before basketball starts.

BK, Have it Their Way

Saturday was a great day to use a small opening in my schedule to see the Bishop Kearney Kings football team. They were taking on their close neighbor the Eastridge Lancers. I didn't expect a good game, I was there to see the outstanding college prospects on the BK team. I had heard a lot about their QB, WR, TE, and RB/LB.

I was only able to stay for the first half because I had a wedding reception to go to. I did get the shots I wanted in the small amount of time I had. Here are some of those great recruits in action.

The Kings running back and linebacker Quentin Gause (32) was impressive on both sides of the ball. He is a solid running back with size that can break multiple tackles every run. On the defensive side he is all over the field creating havoc with his speed and strength. He had 19 tackles and forced a fumble in this game.

Another outstanding player on the Kings team is wide receiver Blair Roberts (5). He is tall with good speed and has a knack for grabbing the ball over any defender.

The quarterback that's job is to get Roberts the ball is senior Jake Meek (3). Not only is he great at throwing the ball but incredible at avoiding tacklers and running it himself.

On the other side of the field from Roberts is another incredible receiver Quinton Washington (1). After a short pass, Quinton tacks on another 20 yards.

Last but not least is Jerome Lewis (15), he is a D1 recruit who has already verbally commited to Virginia Tech. Lewis plays TE and is unbelievable in a small space and can create yardage that shouldn't be there. He also plays on the defensive side and gets large amount of tackles like Gause.

Friday night was a huge game taking place in Hilton. Hilton was taking on Gates-Chili in a recent rivalry of the last few years. Last year Hilton spoiled Gates bid for an undefeated season and the Spartans ended up getting their revenge in sectionals.

The game really looked like the Cadets should run away with this one, as the previous games this season they showed off their high powered offense. Gates stood their ground and scored first with a TD run. Here Levester Tucker (28) is tackled up high by a Cadet defender.

Hilton struck back before the second half with a TD of their own with the ground game. Michael Ingoglia (23) runs out of the reach of GC's defense.

I expected a lot of passing from the Cadets, who are led by their senior QB Duell Smith (10). The Spartans kept Smith from completing long passes and did a great job adjusting to their speedy WR's.

Hilton's defense also kept Gates powerful running backs from advancing too deep into their territory. Regulation time ended with the teams tied 7-7. In overtime, the teams traded TD's back and forth for three OT's.

The game ended in the third overtime when Hilton made their extra point and Gates went for two and the win. The snap was fumbled and GC lost 27-26 in a tough fight to the end. One of the best high school football games I have seen.

Girls Tennis at Gates

Shot my first tennis of the year on Thursday. Gates was matched up against the Brockport Blue Devils. I had to hustle around because all courts were being used at once, both singles and doubles. The reason I had to hurry was because I try to shoot each participant but, if I take too long, a match may end and I will be unable to shoot that player. I usually try and get a few good clicks and keep moving to the next court.

GC Girls Volleyball

Just a quick entry to show some photos of my first girls volleyball of the season. Gates-Chili faced off against the Brockport Blue Devils on Tuesday and Hilton on Thursday. Tuesday was only a 3 game match as Brockport defeated the Spartans 3 games to 0. I tryed a few angles at the game and found out that I am a little rusty since last year. My volleyball eye has left and it may take some time to get it back. I planned on shooting another game right away. The second game was against the Hilton Cadets and like before GC lost 3-0. They did show a bit more promise in these matches and looked much better than the previous match.

Here are some of the shots I took from these two matches...

I like to arrive early to get some close-ups of the players and some of their drills. Here the girls line up as the coach sets them up to bump it back. I used the 300mm as I sat on the gym floor.

Jump serves can create some great shots even though there may be some motion blur do to the low lighting in gyms. I liked this shot as a Brockport player prepares to jump before her serve. I was on the floor for this shot and used a 70-200mm lens.

I then took a different angle by moving up to the second floor track. Here I could get just above the net shots and faces because they were looking straight below me. One of the Gates girls serves as it looks like she is aiming towards me.

This angle is great for net battles whether it is a player spiking the ball or blocking like in this shot.

I also brought a 85mm lens that works well in low light for some group shots. I liked this photo as the Hilton Cadets celebrate an ace.

Rush-Henrietta Football at Fairport

I shot a Saurday game for MaxPreps at Fairport where thay played the Rush-Henrietta Royal Comets. The Red Raiders knew that RH had a great offense and hoped some of their solid defenders can limit the scoring.

The Royal Comets proved they had a potent offense when they scored early and often. Clay Harris (32) was definitely the player of the game with 20 carries for 114 yards and 2 TD's on the ground. He also had a 95 yd punt return for a TD.

Here Robbie Williamson (5) tries to hold back RH's powerful offense.

Ashton Broyld (5) and RH team was too much for the Red Raiders as the Royal Comets put up 40 points. Broyld was 14-21 with 207 yards passing and also had a short goal line TD.

Meanwhile Fairport's offense was lackluster at best, RH held the Red Raiders to 6 points. Here two RH defenders take down Fairport's Jesse DeRose (4).

I think Fairport thought they needed some much needed gatorade to get back into the game.

But the electrolytes did not help because the Royal Comets had a strategy of raising their coaches higher than anybody else. This is their eye in the sky...

The end score was RH 40, Fairport 6.

Yellow Cards First, Tackle Later

Friday night was a busy night for me. I had a bunch of photos to edit from the previous night and wanted to shoot two Gates-Chili games that night. I knew it was going to create a busy weekend of editing but, I shot them anyways.

First game was girls soccer as GC faced off against the Greece Arcadia Titans. It was my first girls soccer of the high school season and it was a very physical game. There were 3 yellow cards given out during the game and this unsuspecting Arcadia player received the only red card of the match. It must of been something she said because their was no real hard contact before the referee blew the whistle.

I liked this shot as the lady Spartans celebrated after they scored their only goal. Brianna Szczepanski (22) celebrates with a teammate as the Titan player can't bear to watch.

Once the cards were out and over with, Greece kept control of the ball and scoring to win 4-1. Here junior Blythe Sheridan (11) keeps her eyes on the ball before controlling the kick.

The second game Friday night was GC football at the stadium facing off against Churchville-Chili. The battle for Chili brings a certain vibe to the crowd because these two schools are so close to each other. The Spartans were prepared and ready to play hard after a tough loss last week. They wanted to show that they still are in contention to defend last years championship.

Gates always comes onto the field as one and here they prepare to run into the middle of the field.

The Spartans stadium is very poorly lit for night games. GC may have a new gym and pool but, new lights should now be on the short list. Poor lighting is a sports photographer's nightmare, so I decided to use some off camera flash. I super-clamped my flash to the bottom of the monopod and ran the cord along it up to the hotshoe. This method limited the red eye results as you can see in this shot of Eli Thomas (32) receiving the hand-off .

Thomas had a great game, showing his power that he had last year. He dragged defenders down field all night. Gates other two backs were big on the ground too. Here Levester Tucker (28) points to the sky after a short run for a TD.

GC ended up beating Churchville 34-13, as Gates proved that they are still a power in Monroe County football.

I am behind on my days because my weekends are busy in the fall. I may miss a few events on the blog but I will do my best to keep this updated.

Thursday I started with Gates-Chili Girls swimming at GC against the Mercy Monarchs. I tryed a few angles but it is very hard to shoot with limited space even in a brand new facility like Gates-Chili. Also, lighting is very difficult, someday I will sneak some strobes in. Anyways heres some of my favorites.

I like the reflection of the red numbers from the scoreboard in this shot. I took one last year that was similar.

I left the pool early to head over to Churchville-Chili, where the boys soccer team was taking on the Spencerport Rangers. Both of these teams have high hopes for this year and have some great players. After the first half was complete the teams were tied 1-1. Spencerport took the lead midway through the second half and even avoided a Saints attempt on a penalty kick late to win 2-1.

When the teams were warming up I took the opportunity to shoot the back up goalies because they usually don't see much game time without a blowout or injury. I really liked the height on this grab by the backup Rangers goalie.

Not only did I get a great goalie shot before the game but during too. The starting goalie for Spencerport made a leap towards me for a Saints shot. I happened to catch him in midair with both hands snagging the ball. You may say, well how do I know it wasn't during practice. If you look carefully on the left you can see the elbow of a Saints player waiting for a rebound.

The hard work and effort these two teams left on the field provided some great photos. This last photo shows a Churchville attacker being blocked by a Spencerport defender.

Looking for a Goal

First game for the Field Hockey team of Gates-Chili felt a little like last year. The Spartans faced off against the Webster Schroeder Warriors at Gates-Chili's stadium. I was hopeing to see some real improvement from last years team but it seems there is still some work to do. Many lady Spartans return to the varsity team but the competition is still a little too strong for Gates to score. A win may be too much to ask for this year but hopefully a few goals are in the works. Good luck Spartans and I hope to be there for that victory.
